What is Homocysteine?

Homocysteine can rise when folate or vitamin B12 functionally falls short, but it is also influenced by lifestyle and genetic factors. It is therefore most useful as part of a combined B-vitamin panel. Trends can help track changes after dietary or supplement adjustments.

Why is Homocysteine relevant?

Homocysteine is a functional marker that moves with your B-vitamin status: with deficiencies of folate, B12, or B6 the value can rise because the body cannot convert homocysteine as efficiently. Elevated values are associated with cardiovascular risk, although whether the relationship is directly causal is still debated. For people with a familial cardiovascular profile or suspected B-vitamin deficiency, it is a useful marker.

How to read Homocysteine in context

Homocysteine is almost always interpreted together with folate and vitamin B12 — only then can you tell whether an elevation is likely nutrition-related or has another cause. Lifestyle also affects the value: smoking, high coffee intake, and certain medications can raise homocysteine. For follow-up after supplementation, re-testing both homocysteine and B vitamins after several weeks is a good way to see effect.
